How to sell cross-stitch patterns on Etsy
PDF cross-stitch patterns are one of the easiest things to sell on Etsy: you make the design once, and every sale is an instant download. This guide walks through the whole process, from a design you are allowed to sell to a listing that buyers find.
1. Start with a design you are allowed to sell
Sell only what you created yourself, or artwork you have the rights to. Characters, logos and brand names from films, games, sports teams and cartoons belong to their owners, and Etsy removes listings that use them. Photos you took, your own drawings and old artwork in the public domain are safe starting points.
2. Make a pattern buyers can actually stitch
Buyers judge a shop by its PDFs. A good pattern has:
- a clear chart with symbols that are easy to tell apart, in colour and in black and white;
- a thread key with every DMC (or Anchor) number, symbol and the number of skeins;
- the finished size on the common fabric counts - the fabric calculator shows how to work it out;
- a version for the Pattern Keeper app, which many stitchers now use instead of paper.
Keep the number of colours sensible and avoid scattered single stitches (confetti) - they make a pattern slow and frustrating to stitch.
3. Set the listing up as a digital download
Choose a digital listing on Etsy and upload your PDF files. Etsy allows up to five files per listing, each up to 20 MB, so a colour PDF, a black-and-white PDF and a Pattern Keeper PDF fit easily. Buyers download them straight after payment - there is nothing to post.
4. Photos that sell
The first photo is what shoppers see in Etsy search, so make it count: show the finished design as it would look stitched, clearly marked as a digital preview. Then add a look inside the PDF, the finished size, what is included, and a close-up of the stitches.
Etsy does not allow links to other websites, social media handles or QR codes that lead off Etsy in your listings, so keep them out of photos and descriptions.
5. Title, tags and description
Etsy titles can be up to 140 characters, and you get 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. Put the words buyers actually type first - for example "cat cross stitch pattern" - and use every tag. Keyword tools such as eRank show what people search for. In the description, say what the buyer gets: size in stitches, number of colours, fabric suggestions, and that it is a digital pattern, not a kit.
6. Pricing
Look at similar patterns in your niche before you choose a price. Bigger, more detailed designs and those with many colours usually sell for more than small, simple ones. Remember Etsy's listing and transaction fees when you work out what you keep.
7. After the sale
Answer messages quickly and kindly, especially from beginners. A short thank-you page in the PDF and a reminder that reviews help small shops are fine - just never offer anything in return for a review.
How CROSSTIA helps
CROSSTIA is built for exactly this: it turns your design into print-ready PDFs (colour, black and white and Pattern Keeper), renders listing photos from your own stitches without AI image generation, writes a title, all 13 tags and a description, and puts everything into one Etsy Package ready to upload.
Questions
Can I sell patterns of famous characters on Etsy?
No. Characters, logos and brand names belong to their owners, and Etsy removes listings that use them without permission. Sell your own designs, or artwork you have the rights to.
How many files can a digital Etsy listing have?
Up to five files, each up to 20 MB. That is enough for a colour PDF, a black-and-white PDF and a Pattern Keeper PDF.
Do I need to stitch the design before selling the pattern?
No. Many shops sell patterns that are shown as digital previews. Label them clearly as previews, so buyers know what they are getting.
